Binky Griptite
Franklin Stribling, widely recognized by his stage name Binky Griptite, is a versatile American guitarist, record producer, and radio host. He gained prominence as a founding member and guitarist for the acclaimed groups Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Soul Providers, and Antibalas, contributing significantly to the revival of soul and funk music through Daptone Records. Between 2017 and 2021, he showcased his musical passion as the host of The Boogie Down, a weekly radio show on WFUV that celebrated classic soul and R&B.
Binky's musical journey took a pivotal turn when he connected with Gabe Roth, a fellow musician and co-founder of Daptone Records. He initially joined Roth's Desco Records house band, the Soul Providers, where he played on early recordings for artists like Lee Fields. Adopting his memorable moniker in 1999, he soon joined Antibalas, an afrobeat ensemble, and toured with them during their formative years.
In the early 2000s, after the disbanding of Desco, Griptite helped form The Dap-Kings, collaborating closely with Sharon Jones. Their debut album, Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, released in 2001, marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership that produced eight studio albums, including the Grammy-nominated Give the People What They Want.
Beyond his work with the Dap-Kings, Binky has lent his talents to notable artists such as Janet Jackson and Amy Winehouse, while also producing for acts like The Impressions. He currently leads the R&B group The Mellomatics and the Binky Griptite Orchestra, continuing to influence the music scene with his distinctive sound.
