He gained widespread recognition for his iconic role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), a character he first portrayed in the original 1973 London and 1974 Los Angeles productions of The Rocky Horror Show.

Curry's impressive stage work includes his participation in the original West End production of Hair, his performance as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the 1980 Broadway staging of Amadeus, and his role as the Pirate King in the 1982 West End version of The Pirates of Penzance.
