Najib Razak
Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, commonly known as Najib Razak, was born on July 23, 1953. He is a prominent figure in Malaysian politics, having held the position of the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia from 2009 until 2018. Najib, the son of former Prime Minister Abdul Razak Hussein, led Malaysia during a transformative period, but his tenure was marred by controversy.
As the chairman of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition from April 2009 to May 2018, and as president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) from November 2008 to May 2018, he oversaw a government that had enjoyed a parliamentary majority for over six decades. However, the coalition faced a significant setback in the 2018 general elections, leading to its defeat.
Najib's political career took a dramatic turn in 2020 when he was found guilty of corruption linked to the infamous 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, one of the largest financial frauds in history. This conviction highlighted serious issues of governance and accountability in Malaysia, significantly impacting the country's political landscape. Despite his controversial legacy, Najib Razak remains a central figure in discussions surrounding Malaysian politics and governance.
