Kathlyn Williams, originally named Kathleen Mabel Williams, was born on May 31, 1879, in Butte, Montana, as the only child of Joseph Edwin "Frank" Williams, a boarding house owner, and Mary C. Boe, who had Welsh and Norwegian ancestry. While many sources mistakenly cite 1888 as her birth year, she is recorded in the 1880 United States Census as being one year old. Williams exhibited a passion for acting from a young age, which led her to join a community theater group and participate in the Woman's Relief Corps, where she showcased her singing talent at local performances.

She began her film career at the Selig Polyscope Company in Chicago, making her cinematic debut in 1908 under Francis Boggs’ direction. By 1910, Williams moved to the company's Los Angeles studio. She gained recognition for her role as "Cherry Malotte" in the 1914 adaptation of Rex Beach's novel The Spoilers, a character later played by notable actresses such as Betty Compson and Marlene Dietrich. In 1916, she starred in the adventure serial The Adventures of Kathlyn and remained active throughout the silent film era, though she transitioned to fewer sound films as time progressed, with her last in 1935.

Williams was married three times. Her first husband, Otto H. "Harry" Kainer, whom she wed on October 2, 1903, was reportedly disapproving of her acting pursuits, leading to their divorce in 1909. She then married fellow actor Frank R. Allen, but they separated in 1914. Her final marriage to Paramount Pictures executive Charles Eyton occurred in 1916 and ended in divorce in 1931.

On December 29, 1949, Williams experienced a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of her friend, Mrs. Mary E. Rose, and caused her to lose her right leg. In April 1950,
