Emperor Shōwa, known outside Japan as Hirohito, was born on April 29, 1901, and reigned as the 124th emperor of Japan from December 25, 1926, until his passing on January 7, 1989. Hirohito was married to Empress Kōjun, and together they had a family of two sons and five daughters. Upon his death, Hirohito was succeeded by his eldest son, Akihito, who was also his fifth child.
