Amy Klobuchar
Amy Jean Klobuchar, born on May 25, 1960, is a prominent American politician and attorney, currently serving as the senior United States senator for Minnesota since 2007. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), which is affiliated with the Democratic Party, Klobuchar previously held the position of County Attorney for Hennepin County, the most populous county in Minnesota.
Raised in Plymouth, Minnesota, Klobuchar earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University and later graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. Before her political career, she practiced law as a partner at two Minneapolis law firms. Her election as Hennepin County Attorney in 1998 marked her ascent in public service, where she oversaw all criminal prosecutions in the county.
Klobuchar made history in 2006 by becoming the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Minnesota, succeeding Mark Dayton. She solidified her position in subsequent elections, winning reelection in 2012 with overwhelming support across nearly all of the state’s counties, and again in 2018. Recognized as a "rising star" in the Democratic Party during 2009 and 2010, she has championed issues such as healthcare reform, consumer protection, agriculture, and climate change, all while maintaining an approachable Midwestern persona.
In February 2019, Klobuchar launched her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination for the 2020 election, but suspended her bid in March 2020 to back Joe Biden. In 2021, she took on the role of chair of the Senate Rules Committee, continuing to influence American politics.
