Jack Soo, born Goro Suzuki in Oakland, California, in 1917, was a charming Japanese-American actor known for his distinctive, laid-back style and sharp wit. Following World War II, he began his career as a stand-up comedian in nightclubs, gaining recognition on the Midwest circuit. Soo's breakthrough came in 1958 when he portrayed the MC/comedian in the acclaimed Broadway musical "Flower Drum Song," a production by Rodgers and Hammerstein that celebrated Asian-American culture.

In 1961, he reprised his role as Sammy Wong in the film adaptation of "Flower Drum Song," prompting his move to Hollywood. Over the next decade, despite facing challenges in securing roles for Asian-American actors, Soo carved out a niche for himself with his cool, deadpan persona. He appeared in several notable films, including "Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed?" (1963), the musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (1967), and John Wayne's controversial "The Green Berets" (1968).

However, Soo is perhaps best known for his role as the sardonic Detective Sgt. Nick Yemana on the beloved sitcom "Barney Miller," which aired from 1974 until his untimely death from cancer in 1979, during the show's fifth season. His performance left a lasting impact on television and helped pave the way for future generations of Asian-American actors.
