Bryan Grant
Bryan Morel "Bitsy" Grant, Jr. (December 25, 1909 – June 5, 1986) was a distinguished American tennis player renowned for his remarkable achievements despite his diminutive stature of 5 feet 4 inches and 120 pounds. He earned the moniker "Itsy Bitsy the Giant Killer" for his ability to triumph over formidable opponents, including tennis legends Don Budge and Ellsworth Vines, particularly on grass courts.
Grant's athletic prowess shone early on as he excelled in football, basketball, and tennis during his school years in Atlanta. His tennis career took off when he secured the Georgia state tennis title in 1929. By the time he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1933, he had already established himself as a nationally recognized player.
During World War II, Grant served valiantly in the Pacific theater, where he endured intense combat conditions, as reflected in his correspondence with his future wife. Beyond tennis, he was involved in social circles, including membership at the Piedmont Driving Club, where he famously escorted actress Olivia de Havilland during the Atlanta premiere of "Gone with the Wind." He also ventured into acting with a small part in the 1959 cult classic "Teenagers from Outer Space."
Grant passed away at the age of 75 after battling cancer, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in American tennis history.
