Joe Alves, born on May 21, 1936, in San Leandro, California, is a distinguished American film production designer renowned for his significant contributions to the cinematic world, particularly in the realm of thrillers. He gained prominence through his pivotal role in the creation of the Jaws franchise, notably directing Jaws 3-D.

Alves collaborated with acclaimed director Steven Spielberg on three films, starting with The Sugarland Express. His most notable achievement came with the groundbreaking thriller Jaws (1975), where he designed the iconic mechanical sharks alongside special effects artist Bob Mattey. The logistical challenges of transporting these untested sharks to the filming location resulted in legendary delays, adding to the film's storied production history.

For his exceptional work on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alves received an Academy Award nomination and secured a BAFTA Award for Best Art Direction, underscoring his artistic excellence. He also lent his talents to Jaws 2 (1978) as both production designer and second unit director. Following the firing of the original director, there were discussions about Alves co-directing, but ultimately Jeannot Szwarc took the helm.

In addition to his work on Jaws, Alves created a striking model of New York for John Carpenter’s Escape from New York (1981), which was noted for its haunting, derelict aesthetic. He also served as a visual consultant for Carpenter’s 1984 film Starman, further showcasing his versatile talents in film design.
