Darrick Doerner

Darrick Doerner, a trailblazer in the realm of towsurfing, has earned his reputation as a renowned big wave surfer and waterman. Known affectionately as 'Double D,' Darrick's journey in surfing began in California during the late 1960s and 1970s before he relocated to the Big Island of Hawai'i for his senior year of high school. Eventually, he settled on the iconic North Shore of Oahu, where his love for the ocean propelled him into a career as a lifeguard.

Throughout his career, which spanned from 1975 to 1996, Darrick collaborated with surfing legends such as Eddie Aikau and Laird Hamilton, honing his skills in big wave surfing and water safety. His extensive lifeguarding experience laid the groundwork for developing essential protocols for handling wipeouts and rescues in challenging surf conditions. Training alongside notable figures like Shawn Alladio, Darrick became a skilled driver for rescue boats, earning respect and trust from his peers.

In 1996, he transitioned from lifeguarding to become an ambassador for surfing, partnering with an apparel company that allowed him to share his passion and expertise globally. Darrick was instrumental in the evolution of tow-in surfing, forming the 'Strapped Crew,' which revolutionized the sport and introduced new techniques that changed the landscape of big wave riding. His contributions have solidified his legacy as a pivotal figure in surfing history, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the ocean and its community.
