George Savalas, a talented Greek-American actor, is widely recognized for his role as Detective Stavros on the iconic television series Kojak, which aired from 1973 to 1978. He portrayed the character alongside his brother, Telly Savalas, who starred as the titular detective. To differentiate himself in the credits, George later changed his middle name from "Nicholas" to "Demosthenes," ultimately being credited simply as Demosthenes.

Before embarking on his acting career, Savalas served with distinction as a U.S. Navy gunner in the Pacific during World War II. He honed his acting skills at Columbia University's School of Drama and initially found success on stage, becoming a respected acting instructor. In addition to his theatrical pursuits, he briefly played drums for the Clyde McCoy Big Band. His television debut came on the Dick Powell Theater, leading to guest appearances on various shows.

Savalas also had a notable film career, appearing in movies such as Genghis Khan (1965) and Kelly's Heroes (1970). Following the conclusion of Kojak, he enjoyed a musical interlude, recording a Top-10 Greek-language hit and performing at prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall. Later, he returned to the stage, participating in numerous off-Broadway productions. George Savalas passed away from leukemia in 1985 at the age of 60, leaving behind his wife and six children.
