Johan Vandewoestijne

1 title Directing Aug 26, 1961 Kortrijk, Vlaanderen. Belgie

Johan Vandewoestijne, born on August 26, 1961, in Kortrijk, Belgium, developed a passion for television and film at an early age. He initially pursued a degree in chemistry before shifting his focus to filmmaking, enrolling in a film school in Brussels. However, he quickly became disenchanted with the institution's philosophy, which prioritized art over entertainment—a view he strongly opposed. After just two years, Vandewoestijne departed from film school and joined Acces Video, where he honed his skills in lighting for corporate videos.

In 1985, he embarked on his first feature film project, "Lucker," which gained a cult following and established his presence in the film industry. This was followed by the production of "Rabid Grannies" in 1988, which was picked up for distribution by Troma, Inc. Under a 20-year contract, this partnership proved fruitful, leading to Troma's continued support of his work, with Michael Herz even encouraging a contract extension.

To make his name more accessible, Vandewoestijne adopted the pseudonym "James Desert," a change suggested by Troma's Lloyd Kaufman. Today, he continues to produce and direct low-budget horror and exploitation films, predominantly in English. Often referred to as the "Roger Corman of the Low Countries," Johan Vandewoestijne's films were primarily distributed by Troma until he recently formed a partnership with Jeffrey Swanson at SGL Entertainment in Concord, California.
