Keye Luke
Keye Luke, born on June 18, 1904, in Guangzhou, China, and later becoming a naturalized American, was a distinguished actor whose contributions significantly shaped Hollywood's portrayal of Asian characters. He passed away on January 12, 1991. Luke is perhaps best remembered for his role as Lee Chan, the "Number One Son," in the beloved Charlie Chan film series. He also portrayed the original Kato in the 1939-1941 Green Hornet film serials, showcasing his versatility and charm.
In addition to these iconic roles, Luke lent his voice to Brak in the popular 1960s animated series Space Ghost, and he portrayed the wise Master Po in the groundbreaking television show Kung Fu. His presence in the film industry extended to family-friendly flicks as well, where he played Mr. Wing in the classic Gremlins movies.
Keye Luke made history as the first Chinese-American actor to secure contracts with major studios, including RKO, Universal Pictures, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His remarkable career helped pave the way for future generations of Asian actors in Hollywood, establishing him as one of the most influential Asian performers in American cinema during the mid-20th century.
