Abbot Howard Hoffman (November 30, 1936 – April 12, 1989) was a prominent American activist renowned for his role in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. He co-founded the Youth International Party, commonly known as the Yippies, which became a symbol of youthful rebellion and political dissent. Hoffman was also a key figure in the Chicago Seven, a group charged for their anti-war protests during the tumultuous 1968 Democratic National Convention.

During the trial, Hoffman faced serious charges, including conspiring to incite a riot and crossing state lines with the intent to incite a riot, under the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Although he and several co-defendants were initially convicted, those convictions were later overturned upon appeal, and the Department of Justice opted not to pursue a retrial. Additionally, Hoffman and the others were found in contempt of court, a ruling which was also vacated.

Hoffman’s activism extended into the 1970s, where he continued to be a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and a champion for various social justice causes. His flamboyant style and confrontational tactics made him a memorable figure in the era's political landscape. Unfortunately, Hoffman's life came to a tragic end when he died by suicide in 1989 at the age of 52, leaving behind a legacy as a fearless advocate for change.
