Karlheinz Böhm

Karlheinz Böhm was an acclaimed Austrian actor, born on March 16, 1928, to the renowned conductor Karl Böhm. He gained international fame for his chilling portrayal of Mark, the psychopathic lead in Michael Powell's landmark film *Peeping Tom*. Prior to this, he captivated audiences as the young Emperor Franz Joseph I in the beloved *Sissi* trilogy.

Böhm's Hollywood career flourished in 1962, when he appeared in three significant films. He portrayed Jakob Grimm in the MGM-Cinerama epic *The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm* and took on the role of Ludwig van Beethoven in Disney's *The Magnificent Rebel*, a film initially made for a television anthology but later released in European theaters. He also played a notable antagonist in the MGM production *Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse*, a vivid remake of the classic silent film.

In the mid-1970s, Böhm collaborated with influential New German Cinema director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, starring in four of his films. He lent his voice to the villain Charles Muntz in the German version of Pixar's acclaimed animated feature *Up* in 2009.

Beyond acting, Böhm dedicated himself to humanitarian causes, founding the organization Menschen für Menschen ("Humans for Humans") in 1981 to support development efforts in Ethiopia. His philanthropic work earned him the Balzan Prize in 2007 and the Essl Social Prize in 2011. He was married to Almaz Böhm, an Ethiopian native, with whom he had two children, while also having five from previous marriages, including actress Katharina Böhm. Karlheinz Böhm passed away on May 29, 2014, at the age of 86.
