Gordon Tootoosis
Gordon Tootoosis, CM (October 25, 1941 – July 5, 2011), was a distinguished First Nations actor of Cree and Stoney heritage, recognized for his passionate advocacy in preserving Indigenous culture and storytelling. A descendant of the prominent Cree leader Pîhtokahanapiwiyin, Tootoosis dedicated his life to uplifting the voices of his community. He famously remarked, "Leadership is about submission to duty, not elevation to power," highlighting his commitment to service.
Tootoosis was a founding member of the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company, where he played a vital role in mentoring aspiring Aboriginal actors. His activism extended beyond the stage as he served both as a social worker and a band chief, championing the rights and representation of Indigenous peoples.
His acting career began with the film Alien Thunder (1974), featuring alongside Chief Dan George and Donald Sutherland. He became widely known for his portrayal of Albert Golo in the acclaimed series North of 60 during the 1990s and gained recognition in the UK for his role as Joe Saugus in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (2002). His film credits include notable projects such as Legends of the Fall (1994) and Disney's Pocahontas (1995).
In acknowledgment of his contributions, Tootoosis was appointed to the Order of Canada on October 29, 2004, with the ceremony taking place on September 9, 2005. He received a Gemini Award for his work on the animated series Wapos Bay: The Series and was nominated for two Gemini Awards for North of 60. In 2011, he returned to the stage after a long hiatus, performing in Gordon Winter at the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon and the Prairie Scene in Ottawa.
