Brenda McDonald
Brenda McDonald, originally named Brenda Olive Nicholls, was a celebrated Canadian actress born on February 12, 1931, in London, England. At the age of 21, she relocated to Canada, initially settling in Toronto before moving to Vancouver, where she married her first husband, Thomas Guy, and raised four children.
After the untimely passing of Thomas due to a heart attack, Brenda pursued her education, earning a teaching degree from the University of British Columbia in 1977. She spent nearly a decade teaching English, French, and Drama before deciding to follow her passion for acting, a journey that spanned over 33 years. Throughout her career, she showcased her talents on stage, in films, and in training videos, and lent her voice to various projects. Brenda was also a vibrant presence in community theatre, actively participating with groups like the North Vancouver Community Players and United Players in Jericho.
Brenda’s notable film career began with her role as a body double for the iconic Katharine Hepburn. She later shared the screen with renowned actors such as Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Anthony Quinn. Her appearances in popular Vancouver-based series included "The X-Files," "Stargate: Atlantis," and "Supernatural." She is particularly remembered for her memorable line as a nun in the film "Elf": “But the children love the books!”
In her personal life, Brenda was married twice and was a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Until the age of 92, she maintained her independence, held onto her driving license, played the saxophone, and was an avid Vancouver Canucks fan. Brenda McDonald passed away on November 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and resilience.
