Stanislav Petrov

Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov, born around 1939, is a former lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who gained international recognition for his pivotal role in averting a potential nuclear catastrophe. On September 26, 1983, while serving as the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system, Petrov faced a critical moment when the system erroneously indicated that a missile had been launched from the United States.

Exercising remarkable judgment and composure, Petrov assessed the situation and concluded that the alert was a false alarm. His decisive action in choosing not to relay the warning up the chain of command is widely regarded as instrumental in preventing a misguided retaliatory nuclear strike against the United States and its NATO allies, an act that could have led to a devastating global conflict.
