Charles Ellis Schumer, born on November 23, 1950, is a prominent American politician who has served as the senior U.S. senator from New York since 1999. A member of the Democratic Party, Schumer has held the position of Senate Majority Leader since 2021 and has been at the helm of the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017. As the longest-serving senator from New York, he surpassed the tenures of notable predecessors like Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Jacob K. Javits in 2023.

Hailing from Brooklyn, Schumer earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, respectively. He began his political career in the New York State Assembly, where he served from 1975 to 1980. Following this, Schumer represented New York in the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms from 1981 until 1999, transitioning through several congressional districts. His Senate career began in 1999 when he defeated three-term Republican incumbent Al D'Amato. Schumer has consistently garnered significant electoral support, securing reelection in 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2022 with impressive margins.

His leadership roles have included chairing the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from 2005 to 2009, where he played a crucial role in the party's gains during the 2006 and 2008 elections. Schumer also served as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus and chaired the Senate Democratic Policy Committee, further solidifying his influence within the party.
