Katie Kissoon
Mac and Katie Kissoon, a talented pop soul sibling duo, hail from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Mac Kissoon, born Gerald Farthing on November 11, 1943, and his sister Katie, born Katherine Farthing on March 11, 1951, moved to the United Kingdom with their family in 1962, where they embarked on their musical careers.
Katie began her journey in music in 1965 as a solo artist under the name Peanut, releasing four singles, and later joined the Rag Dolls, who had two singles in the late 1960s. Meanwhile, Mac was part of the Marionettes and later formed his own band performing at U.S. military bases in Europe. He made waves with his 1969 solo hit "Get Down With It – Satisfaction," which peaked at number 29 in the Netherlands in 1970.
The duo's first collaborative effort came in 1971 with their rendition of "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep." While their version didn’t top the UK charts, it soared to number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. They followed this with the single "Freedom," which, despite not charting in the UK or U.S., found success in Europe, selling nearly a million copies.
Their cover of Neil Sedaka’s "Love Will Keep Us Together" in 1973 further solidified their presence, and in 1975, "Sugar Candy Kisses" climbed to number 3 in the UK charts. Throughout the late 1970s, Mac achieved solo success in the Netherlands.
As their pop soul career waned in the early 1980s, both siblings became sought-after backing vocalists, with Katie working with notable artists like Van Morrison, Elton John, and George Michael. In 1997, they reunited to release a new album titled *From Now On*, showcasing their enduring musical legacy.
