Christine Lagarde

1 title Acting Jan 01, 1956 Paris, France

Christine Madeleine Odette Lagarde, born on January 1, 1956, is a prominent French attorney and political figure who has held the position of President of the European Central Bank since 2019. Prior to this, she was the 11th Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2011 to 2019. Lagarde notably served in the French Government, with her most significant role being Minister of the Economy, Finance, and Industry from 2007 to 2011, making her the first woman to occupy these influential roles.

Lagarde's early life unfolded in Paris, where she completed her legal studies at Paris Nanterre University and earned a Master's degree from Sciences Po Aix. After gaining admission to the Paris Bar, she joined the international law firm Baker & McKenzie in 1981. Her expertise in labor law, anti-trust, and mergers and acquisitions led her to ascend to the firm's executive committee from 1995 to 1999, ultimately becoming its Chair from 1999 to 2004, breaking new ground as the first woman in both capacities before transitioning to a career in public service.

She returned to her home country to take on ministerial responsibilities, first as Minister of Foreign Trade from 2005 to 2007, then as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries for a brief period, and finally, as Minister of Finance from 2007 to 2011. As finance minister, she was recognized for her adept management during the late 2000s financial crisis, earning accolades from the Financial Times.

On July 5, 2011, Lagarde was appointed to succeed Dominique Strauss-Kahn as managing director of the IMF for an initial five-year term, later securing a second term in 2016 by consensus. Despite a conviction for negligence in December 2016 related to the Bernard Tapie arbitration, she faced no penalties. After her nomination to lead the ECB, Lagarde stepped down from the IMF
