Kalju Komissarov (March 8, 1946 – March 6, 2017) was a prominent Estonian actor, director, and educator in the fields of theatre and film. Born in Võru, Komissarov pursued his passion for the performing arts at the Tallinn State Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1968. He began his career as a film director at Tallinnfilm, where he worked from 1968 to 1974, honing his skills in cinematic storytelling.

Following his tenure in film, he transitioned to theatre, taking on the role of principal stage manager at Noorsooteater from 1974 to 1986. He later served as the principal stage manager at Ugala Theatre from 1986 to 1988. Komissarov’s influence extended into education as he became the head of the Higher Theatre School at the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy from 1986 to 1995, nurturing the next generation of theatrical talent.

His contributions to Estonian culture were recognized in 2006 when he received the esteemed Order of the White Star, III class. In his personal life, Komissarov was married to actress Helle-Reet Helenurm, his classmate from the Tallinn State Conservatory, from 1967 until their separation in 1971. Throughout his life, Komissarov left an indelible mark on the Estonian arts scene, remembered for both his creative works and his dedication to theatre education.
