Otto Šimánek

Otto Šimánek (April 28, 1925 - May 8, 1992) was a renowned Czech mime and actor, celebrated for his work in both film and theater. Born in Třešť, he initially trained as an electrician at Tesla in Prague, where he began his journey in the performing arts as an amateur actor. His career took a significant turn when he joined the Theater on May 5 and later toured with the Theater under the Placht, gaining invaluable experience across various theatrical venues.

Šimánek's professional trajectory led him to the Municipal Theaters of Prague in 1958, where he remained until 1990. He was particularly known for his captivating portrayal of the clown Jean Debureau in the dramatization of Vladimír Kožík's novel "The Greatest of the Pierots," showcasing his passion for pantomime.

Beyond the stage, he earned recognition in cinema, participating in around forty films, with his most memorable role in the comedy "I'll Get Up Tomorrow and Bake My Tea." However, it was his iconic portrayal of Mr. Tau in the series of the same name, directed by Jindřich Polák, that solidified his legacy in European television history.

In addition to his acting career, Šimánek imparted his expertise in pantomime as a teacher at the Prague Conservatory and DAMU, influencing future talents such as actor Petr Čepek. To honor his contribution to the arts, a bronze statue depicting him as Mr. Tau was erected in 2011 at the site of his birthplace.
