Hugues Aufray

1 title Acting Aug 18, 1929 Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine, France

Hugues Jean Marie Auffray, widely recognized as Hugues Aufray, was born on August 18, 1929, in France. Esteemed as a singer-songwriter and guitarist, Aufray gained prominence for his captivating French renditions of Bob Dylan's works, which he first encountered while living in New York City. His insightful translations maintain the essence of Dylan's raw emotion.

Among Aufray's most celebrated original compositions are hits like "Santiano," "Céline," "Stewball," and "Hasta Luego." He was born into a family of artistic talent; his mother, Amyelle de Caubios d'Andiran, was a musician, while his father, Henry Auffray, was an industrialist. Aufray's lineage also connects him to the notable French author François Mauriac. He has notable relatives in the entertainment industry, including his sister, actress Pascale Audret, and niece, actress Julie Dreyfus.

After his parents' divorce, Aufray's childhood unfolded in Sorèze, where he developed a passion for music. His journey began in earnest after relocating to Madrid in 1945, where he completed his education and started to perform Spanish songs. By 1959, he secured a record deal following a successful singing competition.

His career took a significant turn when he befriended Bob Dylan during a 1962 tour, leading to his influential 1965 album, *Aufray chante Dylan*. Aufray represented Luxembourg at the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing fourth, and actively supported social causes, including a 1966 anti-racism concert for Martin Luther King Jr. In 2022, he was honored with a special award for his musical legacy at the 63rd International Congress of the Société des Poètes et Artistes de France in Sorèze.
