Yu Shizhi is a celebrated Chinese actor renowned for his impactful contributions to film and theater. Born in a modest background, Yu held various jobs, including positions at a tax bureau and as a warehouse assistant, before he discovered his passion for performing arts. His journey into acting began in 1942 when he engaged in amateur theater activities with the Peiping Youth Organization.

In 1945, he completed his studies in Spanish at Peking University and soon joined the Fatherland Troupe, marking the start of his professional acting career. By 1947, he was part of the Beiping Art Museum, and in 1949, he became a member of the North China People's Art Troupe, now known as the Beijing People's Art Theatre.

Yu’s cinematic debut came in 1952 with the film "Longxugou," leading to a series of notable roles throughout the 1950s and 60s. His portrayal of Yu Yongze in "The Song of Youth" (1959) and Dzerzhinsky in "In the Name of Revolution" (1960) showcased his versatility. In 1978, he gained recognition for his portrayal of Chairman Mao in "The Big Rivers." His later works include "Den Hearts" (1979) and "Tea House" (1982). In 1983, he earned the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 4th Golden Rooster Awards for his role as Guifu, a feudal bureaucrat in "Autumn," solidifying his legacy in the Chinese film industry.
