Gus Green Van Sant, Jr. (born July 24, 1952) is a multifaceted American filmmaker, author, painter, photographer, and musician, renowned for his contributions to cinema. He garnered Academy Award nominations for Best Director for his acclaimed films, *Good Will Hunting* (1997) and *Milk* (2008). His remarkable work on *Elephant* earned him the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. Currently, he resides in Portland, Oregon.

Van Sant began his career directing television commercials in the Pacific Northwest, gradually transitioning to feature films that often explore themes of homosexuality and the experiences of marginalized communities.
