Astrid Vilhelmine Rasmussen, known professionally as Astrid Holm, was born in Sønder Bjerge Sogn, Sorø Municipality, Zealand, to hotel owner Hans Peter Rasmussen and Maren Sofie Rasmussen (née Larsen). Initially trained at the Royal Danish Ballet, she pivoted to acting in 1910, marking the beginning of a remarkable stage career. During World War I, Holm captivated audiences at Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen. In the early 1920s, she gained recognition at the Royal Danish Theatre, where theater director Johannes Poulsen specifically requested her for four consecutive seasons. Her career flourished through the late 1920s to 1940, during which she performed at various theaters across Denmark, frequently traveling abroad.

In the early 1940s, Holm continued her theatrical journey at the Frederiksberg Theatre under Svend Melsing, later moving to Allé-Scenen Theatre with Svend Rindom. Although she appeared less frequently on stage from the mid-1940s, she occasionally graced radio theater productions.

Holm made her film debut in 1917 with Søstrene Morelli, and in 1918, she signed with Nordisk Film, starring in the acclaimed Körkarlen (The Phantom Carriage) directed by Victor Sjöström. This film, adapted from Selma Lagerlöf's novel, became one of her most celebrated roles. After a long hiatus, she returned to the screen in 1942's Ta' briller på and appeared in several more films until her retirement due to declining health.

Holm was married to ballet dancer Holger Holm, who passed away in 1916. She spent her later years in seclusion, battling health issues, and she passed away in 1961 at the age of 68.
