Barbara Cason, born in Memphis, Tennessee, was the daughter of Helen Louise Phebus and Charles Carroll Cason. She embarked on her artistic journey in the 1950s, making a name for herself in local theater and television. One of her significant contributions during this time was co-founding and managing the Front St. Theatre in Memphis. In 1967, Cason moved to New York City, where she became a vibrant presence in the theater scene, both on and off Broadway, until 1973. Among her notable performances was her role in the original production of Noël Coward's acclaimed show, Oh, Coward!, which ran from 1972 to 1973.

Cason also ventured into film, appearing in cult classics such as Cold Turkey and The Honeymoon Killers. In the early 1970s, she transitioned her focus to Los Angeles, where she primarily worked in television until her passing. She gained widespread recognition for her memorable performances as Cloris Phebus in Carter Country (1977–1979) and as Ruth Shandling in It's Garry Shandling's Show (1986–1990).

Cason was married to fellow actor Dennis Patrick from 1970 until her untimely death. She passed away in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 61 due to a heart attack, leaving behind a legacy of diverse and impactful performances in both theater and television.
