Karen Kain
Karen Kain, born in Hamilton, Ontario, is a distinguished figure in the world of ballet, having honed her skills at Canada’s National Ballet School. After joining the National Ballet of Canada, she quickly emerged as a remarkable artist, renowned for her depth and versatility, particularly through her celebrated partnership with fellow dancer Frank Augustyn. Their collaboration reached new heights in 1973 when they competed at the International Ballet Competition in Moscow, where Kain secured the Silver Medal in the Women’s Category, along with a special prize for Best Pas de Deux for their performance.
Throughout her illustrious career, Kain showcased her talent in numerous classical and contemporary masterpieces, collaborating with eminent choreographers and performing as a guest artist with prestigious companies such as the Paris Opéra Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and Vienna State Opera Ballet. Her close creative alliance with Rudolf Nureyev further enriched her artistic journey.
After retiring from performance in 1997, she took on the role of Artist-in-Residence with the National Ballet, later becoming Artistic Director in 2005. Under her leadership, the company flourished, embarking on 23 international tours and introducing 71 new works. Kain's initiatives, including the establishment of the Karen Kain School for Arts, reflect her commitment to nurturing Canadian talent.
Her numerous accolades include the Companion of the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, and the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award, making her a revered figure in the arts. On July 1, she was named Artistic Director Emerita of The National Ballet of Canada, leaving a lasting legacy in the ballet community.
