Joseph Rene, originally named Joseph Rene Perez Herrera, was born on June 9, 1988, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the eldest child of Christina and Marcos Cantu, the latter being a specialist in transmission systems. Joseph has four younger siblings: Amanda Herrera, Blanca Teresa Herrera, Jimmy Cantu, and Sofia Cantu. His grandmother, Teresa Herrera, along with his great aunt, Blanca Resendez, have played significant roles in shaping his upbringing. While attending Harlandale High School, Joseph was actively involved in various sports and demonstrated a strong commitment to his academics. It was during these formative years that he discovered acting through a student film and a drama course. Following high school, he pursued a degree in Kinesiology, focusing on Exercise Science, at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he also minored in Business Administration.

His passion for acting blossomed in college after he encountered a local acting class and was offered representation shortly thereafter. Having been the class clown in his youth, Joseph initially aimed for a comedic career. However, after a transformative experience performing a dramatic scene, he sought to delve deeper into his emotional capabilities.

Joseph's acting career commenced with the television series Memphis Beat (2010) alongside Jason Lee, and he appeared in several short films, including Blackbook Curse (2011) and Trial of Duality (2012), where he faced his first challenging emotional role. He starred in his first leading roles in films such as Between Hell and a Heartbeat (2011) and Davis Farm (2014). His versatility is evident in various characters, from the humorous Jerry in The Reflex Tester (2013) to the troubled Sam Parsons in The Demon Inside (2017). Most recently, he has taken on compelling supporting roles in projects like Race to Win (2016) and Run (2016).
