Melissa Arnot Reid, born on December 18, 1983, is a distinguished American mountaineer renowned for her remarkable achievements in high-altitude climbing, particularly her six successful ascents of Mount Everest.
Raised near Glacier National Park in Whitefish, Montana, Melissa's passion for the mountains ignited after she climbed Mount Rainier in 2001, a pivotal experience that set her on a path of adventure. Following her college education, she embraced a nomadic lifestyle, living out of her car to pursue her mountaineering dreams. In 2002, she began teaching wilderness medicine and soon joined Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. as a guide, rising to the position of senior guide by 2006. Over the years, she has summited Rainier more than 90 times and holds a certification as a Wilderness EMT, also instructing courses through Remote Medical International.
In 2008, Melissa participated in the Everest Team Inspi(RED) to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, alongside notable figures like Jeff Dossett and David Morton. Two years later, she led a celebrity expedition up Mount Kilimanjaro to promote access to clean water, featuring stars such as Jessica Biel and Lupe Fiasco.
Her groundbreaking ascent in 2016 marked her as the second American woman to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen, and notably, she became the first to complete the descent alive under similar conditions. Currently, she is supported by Eddie Bauer and plays a vital role in the development of the “First Ascent” brand alongside other prominent mountaineers, further solidifying her legacy in the climbing community.
