Gary McDonald, born in London in 1961, is a distinguished English actor of Jamaican heritage. His early years were spent at Elliott School in Putney, where he also showcased his athletic talent as a footballer for Wimbledon FC under the guidance of Dario Gradi.

McDonald began his acting career at the Royal Court Theatre, where he performed from 1979 to 1980 in a range of productions including "Hard Time Pressure," "Hero’s Welcome," and Che Walker’s "Been So Long." Throughout the 1980s, he collaborated with the Talawa Theatre Company, taking on roles in significant works such as "The Black Jacobins," "The Importance of Being Earnest," and "A Raisin in the Sun."
