Klári Tolnay (17 July 1914 – 27 October 1998) was a celebrated Hungarian actress whose illustrious career spanned several decades. Born as Rózsi Tolnay in Budapest to István Tolnay and Eleonóra Siess, she spent her formative years in the village of Mohora in Nógrád county. Following her primary education, she completed her secondary studies in Balassagyarmat and Debrecen, where her love for music and performance flourished.
Encouraged by newspaper editor János Bókay, Tolnay pursued a career in acting, auditioning for prominent figures like Gábor Rajnai and Sándor Hevesi. After initial setbacks, she found mentorship under Béla Gaál, which paved the way for her debut as a film actress at Hunnia Film Studio. Her breakout role came with the film "Meseautó," leading to her engagement with Vígszínház in 1934, where she initially took on minor roles.
Tolnay's personal life intertwined with her career when she married director Ákos Ráthonyi in 1936, giving birth to their daughter Zsuzsanna four years later. Following World War II, she transitioned from Vígszínház to Művész Theatre, where she met Iván Darvas, her second husband. In 1947, she played a crucial role in revitalizing the Vígszínház as a co-manager. After its closure in 1950, she continued to shine at the Madách Theatre until her passing on 27 October 1998, leaving behind a rich legacy in Hungarian theatre and film.
