**Rob Hopkins Biography**

Rob Hopkins is a prominent environmental activist and author residing in Totnes, England, widely recognized as the pioneer of the Transition movement, which he founded in 2005. His innovative approach to sustainability has garnered acclaim, with environmentalist Bill McKibben stating that no one has inspired more action in the environmental realm than Hopkins.

Born in Chiswick, London, Hopkins spent his early years in Wiltshire before moving to Bristol, where he completed his A Levels and pursued an art foundation course at Bower Ashton Art College. His journey took a transformative turn in 1988 when he spent two and a half years at Istituto Lama Tsong Khapa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Tuscany, followed by extensive travels through India, Pakistan, China, and Tibet. In Bristol, he earned a first-class Honors degree in Environmental Quality & Resource Management from the University of the West of England, complemented by a Master's in social research and a Ph.D. focusing on the Transition Town movement.

Before returning to England, Hopkins lived in West Cork, Ireland, where he taught permaculture and co-founded an ecovillage project. He initiated the Practical Sustainability course at Kinsale Further Education College, which eventually evolved into the first two-year Permaculture course globally. Over his career, he has authored six influential books on environmentalism and activism, and he has received multiple honorary doctorates, including from the University of the West of England and the University of Namur. Hopkins continues to be a leading voice in the pursuit of sustainable living and community resilience.
