Elsa Chauvel

1 title Writing Feb 10, 1898 Died: Aug 22, 1983 Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Elsa Chauvel (1898-1983), an accomplished actress and filmmaker, was born Elsie May on February 10, 1898, in Collingwood, Melbourne. The second of three siblings, she was the daughter of Edward Wilcox, a tinsmith, and Ada Marie Worrall. During her childhood, the family relocated to South Africa, where her father, performing as Silveni, established a traveling theatre troupe that included Elsie and her brother, Kyrle McAlister. The duo toured extensively, earning acclaim in theatrical circles before returning to Australia in 1924.

Elsie's striking features—petite stature, dark hair, and blue eyes—caught the attention of filmmaker Charles Edward Chauvel while she was acting in the musical Crackers in Brisbane. He cast her as the lead in his 1926 film, Greenhide, and they married on June 5, 1927. The couple sought opportunities in Hollywood, with Elsa performing in Mid-Channel in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Upon returning to Australia, she intermittently acted in various productions, while also teaching elocution and dance.

Elsa and Charles collaborated on seven feature films, including the notable In the Wake of the Bounty (1933) and Jedda (1955). During World War II, they shifted to producing documentaries and later created a television series, 'Walkabout,' for the BBC. After Charles's passing in 1959, Elsa dedicated herself to promoting Australian cinema and preserving their films for the national archive. She was honored with an OBE in 1964 and contributed significantly to the Royal New South Wales Institution for Deaf & Blind Children. In 1973, she published her memoirs, My Life with Charles Chauvel. Elsa passed away on August 22, 1983, in Toowoomba, Queensland, leaving behind a legacy in Australian film.
