Michael Polley
Michael Polley is an Anglo-Canadian actor renowned primarily for his familial ties to acclaimed actress-director Sarah Polley, the daughter of his late wife, Diane Polley. Born in England in 1933, he pursued acting training in the 1950s, where he crossed paths with fellow student Albert Finney, who famously likened acting to bricklaying. Polley made the significant move to Canada, where he established himself in the Toronto area and honed his theatrical skills.
He married Diane MacMillian, a talented actress who later became a notable casting director. Together, they raised four children, including actor Mark Polley and producer John Buchan, alongside a lawyer and a university professor. Their youngest daughter, Sarah, arrived when the couple was in their forties. Although both parents initially hesitated about Sarah's early aspirations in acting, they eventually supported her when she began her career at just four years old, with Diane playing a pivotal role in launching her daughter’s journey.
Though Michael worked as an insurance agent to support his family, he was always present for Sarah during her rise to fame, including acting as her guardian on set for films like Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). Notably, Michael is best recognized for his role as the town doctor in his daughter's beloved series Avonlea (1990). Even in his seventies, he continued to act, taking on a significant role in Sarah's directorial debut for television, The Shields Stories (2004).
