Ger Duany, born in Akobo, South Sudan, is the fifth of ten children in his family, raised by his mother, Nyathak Muon Weng, and father, Thabac Duany Wunbiel. His childhood was marked by tragedy as he was forcibly conscripted as a child soldier during the Second Sudanese Civil War. At the age of 14, he courageously escaped to Ethiopia and later journeyed to Kenya before seeking refuge in the United States at just sixteen, becoming one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.

Duany's acting career began with a notable role in the 2004 film "I Heart Huckabees," directed by David O. Russell, where he portrayed a refugee named Stephen Nimieri. His authentic background as a refugee was a key reason for his casting. He made a brief, uncredited appearance in Russell's 2010 film "The Fighter," which starred Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. His performance in the 2011 drama "Restless City" garnered further recognition.

In addition to acting, Duany produced and starred in the documentary "Ger: To Be Separate" in 2010. This poignant film chronicles his journey from war-torn childhood to refugee status and ultimately to Hollywood success. It also highlights his emotional return to South Sudan, where he experienced the joy of voting for the first time and celebrated the country’s independence on July 9, 2011. Through his work, Duany has become a powerful voice for refugees and a symbol of resilience.
