1 title Directing Apr 02, 1962 Talence, Gironde, France

Pierre Carles, born in 1962 in Gironde, France, had a diverse upbringing that included time spent in Chile and Colombia due to his mother's career as a French school teacher. Upon returning to France in the late 1970s, he pursued studies in socio-cultural animation followed by journalism.

Carles entered the television industry in 1988, initially serving as a news cameraman for France 3 Régions. He later transitioned to writing and contributing humorous content for popular variety shows on networks such as TF1, France 2, Canal +, and M6. Beginning in 1993, he expanded his creative repertoire by producing short documentaries for the Belgian-French program Strip-tease on France 3 and the magazine show Brut on ARTE.

In 1998, he founded a production company in Montpellier, collaborating with a team of around ten audiovisual professionals on his debut feature film, Pas vu pas pris. Over the next two decades, Carles directed or co-directed approximately ten feature-length documentaries that critically examined various societal issues, including media practices and labor conditions. Notable works include Pas vu pas pris (1998), Enfin pris? (2002), and Attention danger travail (2003).

Additionally, Carles captured the essence of influential figures through filmed portraits, most notably Professor Choron in Choron dernière (2008) and the renowned sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, whom he followed for three years, culminating in the documentary La sociologie est un sport de combat (2001). Through these projects, Carles highlighted the critical dimensions of sociology and media.
