Toshishiro Obata
Toshishiro Obata, the visionary behind Shinkendo, is a prominent figure in the martial arts community, particularly recognized for his exceptional prowess in tameshigiri, where he excelled as a champion for multiple consecutive years. An authorized shitoka, Obata's martial journey began with rigorous training in aikido under the esteemed Gozo Shioda at the Yoshinkan Honbu Dojo. His expertise extends to various sword arts, including Nakamura-ryu, Ioriken Battojutsu, Toyama-ryu, Yagyu Shinkage-ryu, Kashima Shin-ryu, and Ryukyu Kobudo, among others.
In 1980, Obata relocated to the United States to share his knowledge and craft a distinct sword art influenced by his comprehensive background. A decade later, in 1990, he established the International Shinkendo Federation, which has since flourished, boasting 80 branches worldwide and continuing to grow. As the founder, his students affectionately refer to him as Obata Kaiso, a title that reflects their deep respect for his teachings. He remains an active presence in the martial arts community, traveling globally to conduct seminars and mentor students.
In addition to his martial achievements, Obata has made his mark in the entertainment industry, appearing in several Hollywood films since 1986, further showcasing the art of swordsmanship to a wider audience.
