Oliver North

1 title Acting Oct 07, 1943 San Antonio, Texas, USA

Oliver Laurence North, born on October 7, 1943, is an influential American figure recognized for his roles as a political commentator, television host, military historian, author, and retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps.

North gained national prominence during the Iran–Contra scandal of the late 1980s, serving as a key member of the National Security Council. This political controversy revolved around the covert sale of weapons to Iran, intended to secure the freedom of American hostages in Lebanon. North was instrumental in the plan's secondary element, which involved channeling profits from these arms sales to support the Contra rebels in Nicaragua, a move that was explicitly banned under the Boland Amendment. Although North was initially convicted on multiple felony counts, his convictions were later overturned, and all charges were dismissed by 1991 after he testified before Congress under limited immunity.

In 1994, North made an attempt to enter the political arena by running for the U.S. Senate seat from Virginia, ultimately losing to incumbent Chuck Robb by a narrow margin. He went on to host radio programs on Radio America from 1995 to 2003, and later on Fox News from 2001 to 2016. Additionally, he served as president of the National Rifle Association from 2018 to 2019, further establishing his influence in American political discourse.
