Robert Towne, originally named Robert Bertram Schwartz, was born on November 23, 1934, and passed away on July 1, 2024. Renowned as a screenwriter, producer, director, and actor, Towne emerged as a significant figure in the New Hollywood filmmaking movement. His most celebrated work is the Oscar-winning original screenplay for Roman Polanski's Chinatown (1974), a film frequently hailed as one of the finest screenplays in cinematic history. Towne drew inspiration for this masterpiece from a chapter in Carey McWilliams's book Southern California Country: An Island on the Land (1946) and an article about Raymond Chandler’s Los Angeles published in West magazine.

In addition to Chinatown, Towne penned the sequel, The Two Jakes (1990), and collaborated on Hal Ashby’s acclaimed films The Last Detail (1973) and Shampoo (1975). He also contributed to the first two installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, showcasing his versatile storytelling skills.
