Gabriel Mary Byrne (5 August 1934 – 4 November 2019) was a prominent figure in Irish broadcasting, renowned for his engaging presence on both radio and television. He is best remembered as the inaugural host of *The Late Late Show*, a groundbreaking program that he helmed from 1962 to 1999, making it the longest-running live chat show in the world. Fondly nicknamed "Uncle Gay," "Gaybo," or "Uncle Gaybo," Byrne's charm and wit captivated generations of viewers.
Byrne's career in broadcasting began with Granada Television in Britain, where he made history by introducing The Beatles to television audiences, a significant cultural moment. He also welcomed Boyzone to the screen in 1993. In a memorable anecdote, he recounted how Paul McCartney once suggested he become the band's agent during a sound check, an offer he politely declined.
From 1973 to 1998, he hosted *The Gay Byrne Hour*, which evolved into *The Gay Byrne Show*, a staple of RTÉ Radio 1, airing every weekday morning. Following his retirement from his flagship shows, he hosted various other programs, including *Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?*, *The Meaning of Life*, and *For One Night Only*. In 2006, he took on the role of Chairman of Ireland's Road Safety Authority.
Byrne's influence on Irish media was undeniable, with *The Irish Times* declaring him the most significant figure in the country's broadcasting history in 2010. Although he was approached to run for the Irish presidency in 2011, he ultimately chose not to pursue the candidacy.
