Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, Curtis made a pivotal move to New York City in 1977 alongside his songwriting partner and childhood friend, Darryl Tookes. This relocation marked a significant turning point in his career, as the duo quickly caught the attention of music legends like Luther Vandross and Todd Rundgren. They gained invaluable experience during a residency at Manhattan's Home club and under the mentorship of “Moogy” Mark Clingman, which ultimately led to their discovery by Roberta Flack.
