1 title Acting Mar 01, 1961 Died: Jul 24, 1989 Gateshead, England, UK

Michael Sundin was a multifaceted English performer, celebrated as an actor, puppeteer, dancer, and accomplished trampolinist, born in Low Fell, Gateshead. He rose to fame as a host on the beloved children's television show "Blue Peter," where he served from 1984 to 1985, although his tenure ended amidst controversy.

Sundin’s early career was marked by his remarkable success in trampolining, where he earned five British titles and one world championship. His theatrical journey began with his debut in the 1980 Christmas pantomime "Jack and the Beanstalk." He showcased his unique combination of acting and acrobatic prowess in the iconic musical "Cats" (1981), taking on the role of the energetic kitten Bill Bailey from 1982 to 1983, inspired by T. S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats."

In 1984, he gained further recognition as the in-suit performer for Tik-Tok in the dark fantasy film "Return to Oz" (1985), a creative interpretation of L. Frank Baum's works. This role led to his casting on "Blue Peter," where he replaced Peter Duncan, debuting in September 1984.

Sundin's departure from "Blue Peter" in June 1985 was shrouded in controversy, with official reasons citing a lack of viewer connection, while speculation suggested his recent public acknowledgment of being gay played a role. After leaving the show, he portrayed the March Hare in the film "Dreamchild" (1985) and had his last appearance in "Lionheart" (1987).

Tragically, Sundin's life was cut short when he passed away in July 1989 at the age of 28 due to complications related to HIV/AIDS, making him the first "Blue Peter" presenter to die. His legacy endures through his contributions to the arts and the conversations he sparked about representation and acceptance.
