Ian Marter was a talented actor and writer, renowned for his portrayal of Harry Sullivan in the iconic BBC science-fiction series Doctor Who, which aired from December 1974 to September 1975. He made a brief return to the series in late 1975, further solidifying his connection to the Doctor Who universe. Beyond his acting career, Marter maintained his involvement with the franchise by adapting various episodes into novel form for the Target novelisation series and authoring an original work titled Harry Sullivan's War.

Marter's literary contributions extended beyond the realm of Doctor Who; he also crafted adaptations of popular 1980s American films, including Splash and Down and Out in Beverly Hills, for the Target series and its subsidiary, Star Books. Many of these adaptations were published under the pseudonym Ian Don, incorporating his middle name, except for Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
