Mala Powers
Mary Ellen "Mala" Powers (December 20, 1931 – June 11, 2007) was a prominent American actress known for her extensive work in film and television. Born in San Francisco, California, her family relocated to Los Angeles in 1940. Powers’ passion for acting ignited at the Max Reinhardt Junior Workshop, leading her to secure her first role in the 1942 film Tough as They Come, featuring the Dead End Kids.
At just 16, she transitioned into radio drama before making her film debut in 1950 with roles in Outrage and Edge of Doom. That same year, she gained significant acclaim for her portrayal of Roxane opposite Jose Ferrer in Stanley Kramer’s Cyrano de Bergerac, earning a Golden Globe nomination.
In 1951, while on a USO tour in Korea, Powers faced a life-threatening health crisis due to a severe blood disease but made a remarkable recovery and returned to acting in films such as City Beneath the Sea and Tammy and the Bachelor. Over her career, she appeared in over a hundred television shows, including Bonanza, Maverick, and Perry Mason.
Beyond her acting career, Powers was a dedicated educator, co-founding the National Michael Chekhov Association and serving as a master teacher at the University of Southern Maine. She published works on Chekhov’s techniques and narrated a documentary on his life alongside Gregory Peck. Powers was also a successful children’s author and left a legacy as a patron of the arts, earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She passed away at the age of 75, leaving behind a rich legacy in both film and education.
