Patrick Joseph Buchanan, born on November 2, 1938, is a notable American paleoconservative author, political commentator, and politician. He has held key advisory roles under three U.S. presidents: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan, establishing himself as a significant voice in the paleoconservative movement.

Buchanan sought the Republican presidential nomination twice, first in 1992 against incumbent George H. W. Bush, where he criticized Bush's abandonment of his tax pledge and his foreign policy stances. His impactful "Culture War" speech at the 1992 Republican National Convention highlighted the ideological battles within the party. In 1996, he ran again, this time against Bob Dole, but he withdrew after garnering just 21 percent of the primary votes. His political aspirations continued as he became the Reform Party's presidential nominee in 2000, advocating for non-interventionism in foreign policy, curtailing illegal immigration, and opposing the outsourcing of jobs due to free trade. He chose educator Ezola Foster as his running mate.

In 2002, Buchanan co-founded The American Conservative magazine and established The American Cause foundation. He has contributed articles to various publications, such as The Occidental Observer, National Review, and Rolling Stone. As a pioneering host of CNN's Crossfire, he also provided political commentary on MSNBC and Fox News. A frequent panelist on The McLaughlin Group, Buchanan's perspectives resonate with the Old Right Republicans, particularly in his critique of American imperialism and the modern managerial state. Since 2006, he has been a regular contributor to VDARE.
