John Grillo
John Grillo, born on November 29, 1942, in Watford, Hertfordshire, is a distinguished British actor and playwright with a rich history in film and television. His academic journey took him to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he immersed himself in student theatre, notably performing with the renowned Footlights in their annual revue.
Following his time at Cambridge, Grillo received an Arts Council Playwriting Bursary, which led to the staging of his works in various cities, including Nottingham, Glasgow, Oxford, and Dublin, as well as at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge. He gained recognition for his role as Mr. Samgrass in the iconic ITV adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, alongside portraying Phillip Marriott QC in the legal drama Crown Court. His versatility allowed him to take on smaller roles in beloved series such as Blackadder II, Bergerac, Taggart, and Rumpole of the Bailey.
In 1997, Grillo showcased his unique comedic talent as Mr. Carkdale, an English teacher communicating solely in Anglo-Saxon, in Steven Moffat's school sitcom Chalk, which ran for two series. He further contributed to the legacy of his work by providing audio commentary for the show's 2008 DVD release. Currently, he is represented by Michelle Braidman Associates, continuing to leave his mark in the entertainment industry.
