Bill McCutcheon
James William McCutcheon, born on May 23, 1924, in Russell, Kentucky, was a distinguished American character actor celebrated for his impactful contributions to film, television, and theater. He was the son of Florence Louise (née Elam) and Robert Kenna McCutcheon, a railroad conductor.
McCutcheon's career took off with his memorable portrayal of Leo the Leprechaun on the beloved children's program, The Howdy Doody Show. He later captivated audiences as Uncle Wally on Sesame Street from 1984 to 1992, a role that earned him an Emmy Award, underscoring his talent in children's entertainment.
In addition to his television success, McCutcheon made notable strides in film, with his debut in the cult classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians in 1964. He later appeared in significant films such as Family Business and Steel Magnolias. His theatrical prowess was recognized when he earned a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his role as Moonface Martin in the production of Anything Goes. His stage repertoire also included performances in You Can't Take It With You and The Man Who Came to Dinner.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, McCutcheon was a devoted father to his three children: Carol, Jay, and Kenna. He passed away on January 9, 2002, at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and creativity in the performing arts.
