1 title Acting Jul 28, 1954 Died: Mar 05, 2013 Sabaneta, Venezuela

Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías (July 28, 1954 – March 5, 2013) served as the 56th President of Venezuela from 1999 until his passing in 2013. His legacy is deeply rooted in his Native-Latino American heritage and his commitment to Bolivarianism, which he interpreted through the lens of "Socialism for the 21st Century." Chávez championed the Bolivarian Revolution, a movement that brought significant socialist reforms, including a new constitution, enhanced participatory democracy, and the nationalization of vital industries.

Raised in a modest family in Sabaneta, Barinas, Chávez pursued a military career but grew disillusioned with the corrupt political system of puntofijismo. In the 1980s, he established the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200 (MBR-200) to challenge the status quo. His attempt to overthrow the government through a coup in 1992, although unsuccessful, led to his imprisonment for two years, after which he founded the Fifth Republic Movement and won the presidency in 1998.

Chávez's administration was marked by the implementation of Bolivarian Missions, Communal Councils, and worker-managed cooperatives, as well as significant nationalization efforts. Despite facing fierce opposition, including a failed coup in 2002 and a recall referendum in 2003, he was re-elected in 2006 and established the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) in 2007. An outspoken critic of capitalism and U.S. foreign policy, Chávez aligned himself with other leftist leaders in Latin America, contributing to the region's leftward shift, often referred to as the "pink tide." His influence earned him a place on Time magazine's list of the world's 100 most influential people in 2005 and 2006.
